Welcome to the TOWN Education Initiative!

The Education Section is here to provide visitors with helpful information about Waukegan’s public schools, as well as links to other topics and articles of interest where public education is concerned.

The school report cards for each of Waukegan’s elementary and middle schools are available in this section, and also the high school.

The Waukegan School District makes a map of school locations available. Click on a school for more information.

Visitors wishing to contact current members of the school board can also find the information they need in this page of the Resources section.

Our past activities regarding public education in Waukegan have also included two open forums with topics devoted to district finances and bilingual education. Summaries of each have been included. Refer to archived material in the event you do not see mention of this in the toolbar.

A Note on Neighborhood Schools

While TOWN has not held a public forum devoted to the topic of neighborhood schools, our education committee has had many opportunities to discuss the pros and cons of the idea.

The neighborhood schools concept has many advantages, such as reducing the need for busing, promoting greater neighborhood cohesion, encouraging an enhanced sense of 'ownership', and facilitating increased parental involvement.

We also acknowledge that an increased call for greater options for parents regarding school choice exists. Neighborhood schools are fine when they are performing at or above standards, but no child should be compelled to attend a failing school. Currently, 9 of District 60's 20 are on status as failing.

It is our hope, regardless of whether or not Waukegan Public School District 60 ever does anything formally to return to neighborhood schools, that all schools in our district will take the necessary steps to see that they become not only the first choice for families because of proximity, but the best choice as well because of the quality of the education available there.

Thanks for visiting the TO.W.N. Education Section.
